Acres: 2,200 +/- Acres
Location: This spectacular hunting ranch
is located just 8 miles east of Uvalde in Uvalde County.
The ranch has 1.1 miles of frontage on US Hwy 90, ½ mile
of frontage on CR 105, and 50 ft. on CR 102. The driving
time from San Antonio is about 1 hour, and it is only 15
minutes from the Frio River recreation areas at Concan.
Description: The largest portion of
the ranch is South Texas type terrain with thick stands
of mesquite, oaks, and incredible variety of other superior
tree and brush species favored by big whitetail bucks.
Approximately 20 large food plots planted in high protein
Illinois bundle flower, a thick blanket of strong native
grasses, and a year-round supplemental feed program provide
an unmatched level of quality wildlife nutrition. In addition,
the Dry Frio River runs along the property for over 3 miles
creating a natural pocket for a multitude of animal and bird
species. However, what makes Blue Mountain Ranch truly unique
is that it contains its own scenic mountain range rising over
300 feet to a total elevation of 1,262 feet! A good 2-wheel
drive road winds up and over the top and the views from several
lofty peaks rival even the best of the hill country!
Water: There are 6 water wells, all with
submersible pumps, several nice ponds, and approximately 6 miles
of buried water line that provide water to wildlife in all areas
of the ranch.
Wildlife: The name Blue Mountain is synonymous
with trophy whitetail deer. During the 2003-2004 season, 2 deer
in the 190 B&C Class were harvested on the ranch, including a
monster 195 B&C with quadruple drop tines! The Texas Trophy
Hunter television show and several others have chosen Blue
Mountain as one of their favorite feature destinations. In order
to ensure the ranches continued standard of impeccable deer quality,
over 100 South Texas genetic whitetail bucks and numerous bred does
have been stocked at Blue Mountain in the last 4 years from the VLC
scientific whitetail program, one of the largest and most highly
respected in the country. A photo portfolio showing each buck
introduced into the ranch is available for viewing upon request.
In addition, Blue Mountain has a Texas Parks and Wildlife Level
3 MLD Permit which allows for 4 full months of whitetail deer
management annually. Trophy exotic species that call Blue Mountain
home include aoudad sheep, Texas Dall Sheep, and others. Javalina,
as well as huge flocks of turkeys and dove can be found throughout
the ranch and quail hunting is available year-round with Blue Mountain’s
private bird hunting permit. The ranch has also recently received its
own scientific breeding permit and has just completed the construction
of 4 new state-of-the-art whitetail breeding pens next to the main
headquarters. With eleven 3-man deer blinds set on concrete slabs,
four portable 3-man blinds, and several tripod bow stands, Blue
Mountain is every hunter’s dream come true! There are approximately
25 feed stations at Blue Mountain providing year-round free choice
protein pellets, corn, alfalfa hay and water to the deer.
Improvements: Blue Mountain has one of the most
spectacular yet subtle hunting lodges in the state. Completed
in the fall of 2003, the main lodge contains 5,000 square feet
of interior space and an imposing 2,000 square foot wrap-around
porch. The lodge is tucked against the foot of the mountain range
and was designed to blend in to the surrounding countryside to
protect the visual harmony of the ranch. With 5 huge bedrooms, a
massive great room, dining area and kitchen all adorned with a
perfect blend of rustic and modern décor, the main lodge could
serve as an impressive commercial hunting headquarters or simply
an extraordinary private retreat. Additional improvements include
a large manufactured foreman’s house nestled in a beautiful grove
of live oaks, as well as another manufactured ranch hand house close
by. The ranches original corrals, feed barns, and cattle working pens
have been restored near the main entrance to create a visual reflection
of Blue Mountain’s long ranching history. The property is perimeter
fenced and cross-fenced by an 8-foot tight lock game fence constructed
in 2001. Over 20 miles of interior roads have been recently improved
to provide 2-wheel drive access throughout the ranch, and an
additional 4 miles of road from Hwy 90 to the main lodge are
topped in Vulcan trap rock.
Remarks: In one special place, on one special ranch,
Blue Mountain offers all of the assets that most hunters and ranch
owners only dream about. With thousands of acres of unspoiled habitat,
it has already established itself as a whitetail enthusiast’s paradise.
With its convenient location near the Frio River and Texas Hill Country,
it has become one of Texas’ premier year-round recreational retreats!
