Description:

The J 7 Ranch is located between Port Lavaca Bay and Lake Texacana and stretches from Swan Lake to Keller Creek, offering a tremendous amount of diversity. The J 7 Ranch is rich in history, being owned by the same family since 1875. The ranch headquarters consists of a well-kept 4BR/3.5BA main house, a 2BR/1BA ranch foreman’s house, and several barns and sheds. The majestic Oak, Elm, and Ash trees tower over lush cattle pastures. Native grasses have been managed for optimum growth to provide forage for wildlife and livestock grazing. Heavy native brush areas provide coverage for all wildlife and cattle. Approximately 50 acres is currently in hay production, with the remaining acreage used for grazing.

Water:

The J 7 Ranch is very well watered with 9 water wells all working on electric pumps or windmills which supply the water troughs. Natural water includes the magnificent Swan Lake at the west boundary, which is a perfect area for fishing, bird watching, or duck hunting. Many anglers wade the shallow lake or use kayaks to fish. Keller Creek on the east boundary flows year-round and is home to largemouth bass, perch, and many species of ducks. Keller Creek feeds into a small lake at the headquarters. Wet-weather Huisache Creek flows through the center of the ranch adding to its beauty and character.

Wildlife:

Native wildlife is abundant on the ranch and includes Whitetail deer, dove, quail, and turkey. Additionally, the bird watching is amazing as the ranch offers sanctuary to a multitude of annual and seasonal birds. Swan Lake is prime for targeting redfish most of the year with both flounder and trout frequenting it when conditions are right.

Minerals:

None.

Remarks:

The historic J 7 Ranch was originally part of the Traylor Ranch purchased in 1875. This section of the ranch belonged to Josephine Traylor, who was the 7th child of Josiah Claiborne Traylor, hence the J 7 brand. That brand has been registered in Jackson County since about 1892 when Josephine was willed the property.
